River Bend Was Our Home

After five years of visiting various retirement towns along the northeast coast in 1976     we decided that River Bend , North Carolina would be the place we would settle  as our permanent retirement home.  It is a model town of beautiful homes with plenty of trees and shrubs of various kinds with an ever changing array of color throughout the seasons.  It is a friendly town with no gates or guards to keep people out.  Everyone is Welcome here.

This quiet, beautiful town on the waters of the Trent River is primarily a residential area  (pop.3000) with a limited amount of businesses.  Here folks take pride in their properties and home where gardening is a major hobby.  It is much like a resort with  golf, tennis, swimming, boating, softball, basketball, hiking, cycling, jogging, photography, painting, quilting, bridge etc.  Pictured below are some of the facilities, homes and businesses that contribute to the quality of life in River Bend.  Our major shopping centers, post office, airport, lodging facilities and hospital, are all within a 15 minute drive.   River Bend's new marina with floating docks, a rental hall , and Ship's Store provide modern boating facilities.  The River Bend Golf and Country Club is recognized as having the No.1 18 hole golf course, recently irrigated.

What also makes River Bend so attractive is one of the lowest tax rates in ths State.  Town government consists of a Mayor and five members of the Town Council elected to four year terms. This administration is dedicated to the needs of it's people.  Hospital and all types of state-of-the -art medical services are provided in New Bern within five miles.  The area is served by 50  restaurants and abundance of retail stores, including Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Belks, J.C.Penny, Loews, Family Dollar  Other recreation is provided by "Strike One" bowling alleys, a roller skating facility. two multi-screen movie theaters and the YMCA.  Major hotels include the Holiday Inn,Sheraton, Comfort Inn, Hampton Inn and the Bridge Point Hotel.  A new modern Marriott Hotel is currently under construction adjacent to the Hampton.
The Riverstone Assisted Living Community and the Howell Health Center are also located here.

Normally, winters in River Bend are quite mild allowing for outside activities twelve months a year.
Occasionally however we do get snow which does not last more than a day or two.  During 1987 we
experienced a blizzard. A few years later we had very cold weather which caused the canals to freeze over providing residents with a chance to do some ice skating.  I had to chop out the ice around my boat in order to prevent damage.  Pictured below are pictures of the snow left by a storm during December 2000.

January 2002 provided us with some more snow to start the new year.  Actually we have only had snow five times during the past fifteen  years.  The snow never lasts long as it is gone within a day or two due to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream.
